Statement regarding LockBit claims

Earlier this morning we became aware of tweets from LockBit, the cyber-criminal gang, claiming that they had compromised Darktrace’s internal security systems and had accessed our data. Our security teams have run a full review of our internal systems and can see no evidence of compromise. None of the LockBit social media posts link to any compromised Darktrace data. We will continue to monitor the situation extremely closely, but based on our current investigations we are confident that our systems remain secure and all customer data is fully protected.

Darktrace, the leader in Enterprise Immune System technology, has today announced that Parchment has deployed Darktrace’s unique technology for cyber defense into the heart of its network.

Based in Scottsdale, Arizona, Parchment is the most widely adopted digital credential management service, allowing learners, academic institutions, and employers to request, verify and share academic credentials in simple and secure ways. Parchment has rapidly grown its institutional member network to include college and university registrars and admission offices. Today, the active Parchment network spans 25 percent of U.S. enrollments in secondary schools and 17 percent of U.S. enrollments in postsecondary schools.

Given that Parchment’s platform safeguards the academic credential information of millions of learners, security is top priority. Parchment needed to ensure it was armed with the best tools for real-time detection and that it had complete visibility of its entire network in the face of a rapidly-evolving threat landscape. Given this strategy, Parchment decided to install Darktrace’s Enterprise Immune System inside of its network.

Powered by unsupervised machine learning developed by specialists from the University of Cambridge, Darktrace’s innovative technology automatically learns ‘normal’ for every network, device, and user. From this learnt ‘pattern of life’, Darktrace can detect anomalies in the network, in real time. In addition, the Threat Visualizer provides total visibility of the network, allowing Parchment to spot emerging threats and mitigate potential attacks, before any damage is done.

“Darktrace’s use of machine learning to define normal behavior within our network is the critical differentiator from other solutions, and sets it apart from legacy tools,” commented Bob Langan, Vice President of Engineering, Parchment. “It is reassuring to know that there is an active way to be managing our network health 24/7, and one that will grow and evolve as our company does.”

“It is great to see Parchment, a leading digital service within the education industry, leveraging Darktrace’s machine learning technology,” added Rob Sass, Managing Director, Darktrace. “As the cyber threat landscape moves towards increasingly fast and automated attacks, it is critical for institutions to adopt a new, proactive approach to defend critical assets. The Enterprise Immune System delivers this, in its capacity to stay abreast of this new era of threat.”
